PREA- Prison Rape Elimination Act
The Prison Rape Elimination Act or PREA was passed into law in 2003 by then President George W. Bush. The act aims to eradicate all acts of sexual abuse through a zero-tolerance policy and to verify the law’s effectiveness through research and information and statistical gathering.
PREA covers all adult and juvenile facilities, both jails (transitory populations) and prisons (non -transitory populations.)
PREA protects the 8th amendment rights of all inmates from sexual assault, sexual harassment, ‘consensual sex’ with staff and inmate-to-inmate sexual assault.
PREA is a top priority of the MCSO detention staff all of whom are trained to take a zero tolerance stance on any and all sexual abuse. Any and all sexual abuse by employees, contractors, vendors, volunteers and inmates is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
No person, regardless of position or title, has the authority to commit or allow sexual assault.
