Deputy Sheriff

Detention Officer

It takes a special kind of person to become a detention officer. You have to have skills at quickly and adeptly reading people, assessing whether a situation may suddenly become dangerous and you have to be a solid team member always on the look-out for the safety of others as well as your own. You have to be good at analyzing and getting to the bottom of complex problems. You have to have eyes in the back of your head and be able to withstand the clever manipulations of inmates. Not only is the profession of detention and corrections challenging, it is also remarkably fast growing and the opportunities to advance here in this jail system, the third largest in the United States, are boundless. If you are strong of mind and body, if you love a challenge, if quickly advancing in the ranks of one of the most well-known and best run jails in the country, then being a Maricopa County detention officer may be just the job for you.

Emergency Dispatcher

Emergency Dispatchers are the first of the first responders. At MCSO, our Dispatchers handle 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls in addition to monitoring and dispatching deputies on a multi-channel radio network via a computer aided dispatch system. This is a fast-paced position requiring excellent multi-tasking skills. Dispatchers must prioritize calls and obtain pertinent information to relay to deputies in the field. While the work can be highly stressful, it can also be quite rewarding. Training for this position takes approximately one year before being released on your own. Shifts vary as Communications operates 24/7 365 days a year.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Volunteer Posse

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Volunteer Posse is comprised of people from all walks of life who want to give back to their community. Posse volunteers work with deputies and civilian staff to help improve law enforcement and enhance public safety. While not compensated, the volunteers perform an invaluable service to the community. Posse volunteer personnel are trained in a variety of essential support functions, such as:
  • Search and Rescue
  • Crime Scene
  • Security Patrol
  • Support Administrative
  • Support Civic Functions
  • Disaster Relief
  • Emergency Response

Become a volunteer!
MCSO is looking for members of our community who want to volunteer their services and join our team. The program is also a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in exploring a career path in law enforcement.

Minimum requirements:
  • At least 18 years of age
  • A legal US resident
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Be in good health
Applicants cannot have been convicted of any felonies, have any misdemeanor convictions in the last 12 months, or a record of improper personal conduct which may affect their suitability for assisting law enforcement.
