The Jail Crimes Unit handles all cases originating in the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Jail System, Maricopa County Court Facilities, and the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Centers.


Investigations include—but are not limited to—homicides, assaults, aggravated assaults, sexual assaults, escapes, promoting prison contraband, and destruction of jail property.

Our aim is to ensure that inmates remain safe while in custody and to assist them in successfully returning to the community whenever possible.

The duties of Jail Crimes Investigators include:

  • Conducting interviews of victims and witnesses

  • Investigating leads and suspects

  • Collecting and documenting evidence at crime scenes

  • Attending autopsies

  • Directing other investigative personnel at crime scenes

  • Preparing cases for submission to prosecuting authorities

  • Writing reports and maintaining statistical records

  • Testifying before Grand Juries, Justice Courts, and Superior Courts
